Route Focus Areas

Across the 12+ route variations you will encounter a number of roads and roundabouts that appear frequently. Here are a few areas we think you should practise, as they’re likely to feature in your test:

  1. Sandy Lane & Chester Road: These are familiar parts of most Chester routes, used right at the start and end of the tests. The road can be narrow in places, so keep your speed steady and be ready to meet oncoming traffic calmly and safely.

  2. A41 Ring Road & Roundabouts: You’ll often use the A41 for faster driving and multiple roundabouts in a row. Plan your lane choices early, keep mirror checks frequent, and aim for smooth exits - especially at the Kingsway and Caldy Valley junctions.

  3. Hoole Lane & Canadian Avenue: A typical area for residential driving and meeting traffic. Keep it slow and use good clutch control when passing tighter gaps or turning near parked vehicles.

  4. Boughton & Tarvin Road: This busier stretch will test your awareness and anticipation at traffic lights and junctions. Maintain a safe following distance and show confidence joining or leaving the main road.

  5. Newton Lane & Oaklea Avenue: A quieter section where manoeuvres or independent driving may be included. Watch for changes in speed limits and junction priority - and remember to check both sides carefully when emerging back onto Newton Lane.
