Route 1 Instructions:

  1. From the DTC, turn left onto Station Road and at the end turn left.
  2. Continue along Monmouth Road and at the roundabout turn left.
  3. Join the A465 and turn right.
  4. Travel along Skenfrith Road and at the end turn right onto the B4521.
  5. Take the third right into Wyndham Road and at the end turn left.
  6. Continue along Croesonen Road and at the end turn right.
  7. Turn left onto Hereford Road.
  8. Turn into St Teilos Road / Llwynu Lane and take the second left.
  9. Continue along Hillcrest Road and go ahead at the roundabout.
  10. Turn left onto Meadway and left again at the end into Old Barn Way.
  11. Turn left into Ysguborwen.
  12. Continue on Hillcrest Road and go ahead at the roundabout.
  13. Take the second right into Old Barn Way.
  14. Turn left into Derwen Way, then left at the end.
  15. Turn left onto Llwynu Lane, then left at the end.
  16. Turn right at the lights onto Old Hereford Road.
  17. Turn right into Avenue Road, then right again into Harold Road.
  18. At the end turn right onto Chapel Road, then left onto North Street.
  19. At the end turn left onto Brecon Road and continue ahead at the roundabout.
  20. Turn left into Park Road, then take the second left into Park Avenue.
  21. Take the second left into Deri Road, then turn right at the end.
  22. Turn right onto Park Crescent.
  23. Turn left into Llwynu Road, then right into Park Avenue.
  24. Turn right onto Hereford Road / Monk Street / Cross Street / Monmouth Road.
  25. Take the third left into Station Road and return to the DTC.

    5. Turn right into Gypsy Lane, then left into Gypsy Crescent.

    6. Turn right into Woodland Crescent and right at the end.

    7. Turn left onto Llanellen Road.

    8. Turn left at the craft shop, then left onto the A4042.

    9. At the roundabout turn right onto the A465.

    10. Turn right onto Hereford Road, then right into Skenfrith Road.

    11. Turn right at the end onto the B4521 / Grosvenor Road.

    5. Turn left into St Davids Road, then right back onto Llwynu Lane.

    6. Turn right into Derwen Way, then right at the end onto Old Barn Way.

    7. Turn right again onto Ysguborwen, then left onto Old Hereford Road.

    8. Turn right at the traffic lights onto Avenue Road.

    9. Turn right into Harold Road, then right at the end onto Chapel Road.

    10. Take the second left into Western Road and left again at the end.

    11. Turn right into Cresta Road, then right into Dingle Road / Delafield Road.

Key Route Focus Areas

There are a number of roads, roundabouts, and local quirks that appear again and again throughout the Abergavenny test routes. Getting to know them ahead of time can make everything feel far more familiar:

  • A465 Heads of the Valleys Road
    This very well known, sweeping A-road pops up in several routes and is great practice for handling higher-speed traffic. You’ll likely enter or exit via slip roads, so keep an eye on your mirrors and build speed smoothly.

  • Monmouth Road & Hereford Road
    Two of the main arteries around town, featuring mixed limits, pedestrian activity, and several junction types. They’re perfect for practising your lane positioning and hazard awareness.

  • Llanellen Road & Gypsy Lane Loop
    This area crops up for more residential-style driving with it's narrower bends and changes in gradient. Work on your clutch control, steering accuracy, and handling oncoming traffic here.

  • The Hillcrest / Old Barn Way Estate
    A cluster of tight corners, small roundabouts, and one-way stretches. If these appear during your test, expect lots of mirror work, steady speeds, and quick decision-making.

  • Brecon Road Roundabouts
    Brecon Road has several consecutive roundabouts which will test your rounabout etiquette of judging priority, maintaining flow, and choosing the correct lane. They’re not huge, but they come in quick succession.

Route Choice

Don’t shy away from driving at busier periods like the rush hours during morning and late afternoon. Your test might be in heavy traffic.

Try to mimic the drive-time of a typical test while practising (around 40mins) to build up driving resilience and concentration levels.

Toilets and parking are available on site, though disabled access is yet to be determined so it’s worth calling in advance should you require this.
