Key Test Moments

Though each of the 14 routes are different, there are a few roads and roundabouts that occur in many of them. These are worth practising until you are completely comfortable driving them:

A96 - East Road & West Road
This is the heart of many routes. It’s a mix of single and dual-carriageway sections, so you’ll need to handle speed changes, multiple roundabouts, and steady lane discipline.

Covesea Road & Lossiemouth Road
Used to test your awareness on faster stretches and changing speeds. Look out for hidden junctions and side-road traffic, especially near Bishopmill where speed drops sharply.

Bishopmill Brae & Boroughbriggs Road
A common area for manoeuvres and direction changes. The slopes will test your clutch control and observation skills.

Alexandra Road & High Street Roundabouts
These roundabouts are close together, and often with busier traffic. Plan ahead, pick the correct lane early, and show good roundabout technique.

Elgin Town Centre Sections
Expect stop-start traffic, tighter corners, and pedestrians near the shops. Your examiner will look for steady progress and spatial awareness so don’t let parked cars rush your decisions.

Additional Route Tips

If you’ve downloaded the app, you have perhaps the single biggest advantage when it comes to passing your test. Here are a few other tips to help you get the most out of it:

Selecting a Route

Scroll through the route previews to find a good starting map. You can then progress to more difficult maps as confidence grows.

Weather & Time

Your test might be in rush-hour during rain… so it pays to practise at different times of the day, and in all weather conditions.

Drive Time

The test will last around 40 minutes, so it’s a good idea to keep your sessions to a similar length. Regular practise will help you progress.

“Best driving test app out there! Helped me become more confident ready for my test.”

Passed first time! Practicing the routes really helped!”

Independent Driving Test

In your driving test, the examiner will select a particular route on the SatNav device. You will be requested to follow the route selected by the examiner in addition to the directions from the sat nav. The make and model of the device will not matter, mainly because Route-led's test-routes work with lots of devices. You cannot use your personal SatNav device during the Elgin driving test. For more info, you can get up to date changes to the driving test here.

Route-LED provides customers with a high degree of support and help to utilise our test routes. You’ll get used to all the different sections of the roads to be travelled during the test. We would suggest using a skilled driving instructor as well. For more information on what you can do to pass your driving examination please go to Driving Test Practice

When you go off the independent driving route, it’s not going to have any effect on your examination results except if you do some other driving error, break a traffic regulation or make a traffic offence. In the case where you make an incorrect route choice, the test examiner will help you get back to the correct route. Where you have obscure or poor road signs, the examiner will instruct the examinee until they get to the following clear road sign. The examinee doesn’t need to have a detailed understanding of the town. You cannot use your own Sat-Nav for independent driving, mainly because it gives the student very detailed instructions. The independent driving part will test if you can effect secure independent choices.
