Route Focus Moments

There are a few areas that feature regularly in the 19+ route variations around Musselburgh. It’s worth taking some extra time to practise the following roads and roundabouts a little more as they may well show up:

  1. Newhailes Road & Newcraighall Road
These busy connecting roads appear on nearly every route. You can expect regular traffic lights and roundabouts leading towards the A1 and Edinburgh. They're good for practising lane positioning, mirror use, and smooth braking.

  2. Milton Road & Milton Link
A key dual-carriageway section where you’ll often merge or exit using short slip roads. Keep your acceleration steady and plan your mirrors and signalling early when joining or leaving the A1.

  3. Duddingston Park South & Mountcastle Area
A quieter residential stretch with several mini roundabouts to negotiate and traffic lights close together. It’s a good test of timing, clutch control, and awareness of pedestrians.

  4. Portobello High Street & Brighton Place
A busier town environment with plenty of lights, crossings, and parked vehicles to navigate. Focus on staying patient, maintaining space, and keeping to the 20-30 mph limits.

  5. Olivebank Road Roundabout
Often used on the return leg, this well-used roundabout connects several local roads. As always approach in the correct lane early, and use it as a chance to show confident mirror checks before leaving.

Route Tips

The biggest advantage you can have for test day is learning the routes in advance. Compliment that advantage with these additional tips and you’ve got a great chance of passing your test!

Route Difficulty

Use the app route preview to find a good starter route, then as your confidence grows you can tackle the more complicated maps.

Time / Weather

Try to drive at various times for rush-hour traffic and quieter times. Also don’t just drive in dry weather, it might be raining on test day.

Session Length

Your test will be around 40mins long, so try to make each practise session 40-50mins long and cover an entire route map each time.

Learn Edinburgh (Musselburgh) Test Routes

The examiner will require the student to take directions from a configured SatNav independently. The Satnav will include the route that the student needs to follow. The make or model of Sat-nav device used during the examination won’t make a difference as the driving test route will be the same. In case the student takes the wrong route, the examiner will advise accordingly. That said, we very much suggest the Tom-Tom Start 52 mainly because it’s what examiners tend to utilise whilst conducting driving tests.

Being a service-oriented company, we supply Route-led's clients with additional support and help for our driving test-routes. How it works

Image of Sat-nav App that can install driving test routes

If you go off the independent driving route, it will not have any effect on your examination score unless you make a traffic offence, break a traffic regulation or do an additional driving fault. If you make an incorrect turn, the test examiner will assist you return to the route. In case of poor or obscure road signs, the examiner will direct the learner until such time as they get to the next clear traffic sign. The learner doesn’t need to have a detailed knowledge of the area. You cannot use your personal Satnav for independent driving, mainly because it gives the student very detailed prompts. The independent driving section will test if you are able to effect secure independent decisions.
