Key Focus Areas

Some areas of the 20+ route variations appear frequently, so are worth a little extra drive time. The roads and roundabouts below have been gathered as they appear more than others:

  • Calder Road Roundabout (A71)
    This multi-lane roundabout is one of the busier points across the Currie routes. Keep yourself calm, plan your lane choice early, and don’t rush - timing and mirror checks are everything here.

  • Lanark Road
    A key stretch used on almost every test route variation, combining varying speed limits, traffic lights, and bus lanes. It may seem daunting, but it's the ideal place for demonstrating awareness and steady car control.

  • Riccarton Mains Road
    A quiet but technical section featuring multiple roundabouts in quick succession. It’s great for showing unwavering observation and clutch-control as you progress at lower speeds.

  • Muirwood Road & Corslet Road Area
    This residential loop will have parked cars to negotiate, and is one of the popular manoeuvre spots. Position yourself well as you pass the cars, and keep an eye on your speed throughout.

  • Wester Hailes Road
    As one of the faster roads on the test - it's a good test of your smooth acceleration control and mirror use. Approach each of the junctions confidently, and keep to the limit as you rejoin more built-up areas.

Independent Driving Test


During your driving test, the examiner will select a particular route on the Sat-Nav device. You will be requested to follow the route chosen by the examiner as well as the directions from the Satnav device. The make and model of the device won’t matter, this is due to the fact that Route-LED's test routes are compatible with very many devices.You cannot utilise your personal Satnav during the driving test. The Edinburgh (Currie) test centre can be found at 13-15 Bryce Road, Currie, Edinburgh Edinburgh EH14 5LT. There should be ramp access for wheelchair users but we suggest calling to confirm. There are also usually male, disabled and female toilets for use at the test centre but it's probably better to use these at your house in advance! It’s occasionally feasible to park at the test centre. If this is not possible, it ought to be fine to park close by and get there by foot. Practise busy roads, one-way streets, roundabouts and difficult junctions.
