Key Areas To Practise
With 20+ route variations to drive, there are a number of key areas that appear more than others. If possible, try to spend some additional time on the following areas of the Durham test routes:
Millburngate Bridge Roundabout
One of Durham’s most complex roundabouts, connecting several busy routes makes for a great test of calm lane discipline and mirror use.
Hallgarth Street & Church Street
These narrow central roads will test your clutch control and composure under pressure. Expect pedestrians, parked cars, and the occasional bus pulling out.
Potters Bank & Elvet Hill Road
Hilly, scenic, and a little twisty in places - making for a real test of control and anticipation. Keep your gears low and don’t rush when meeting traffic.
Belmont & Dragon Lane Area
A quieter section with small roundabouts and industrial turns, often used for the required manoeuvres.
Stonebridge Roundabout (A690)
A key point of many route variations. Traffic can flow quickly here, so approach gently and pick your gap with confidence.
Route Tips
Having the routes to practise is perhaps the biggest advantage you can give yourself for test day. Here are a few more tips to help you get the most out of your driving:
Session Time
If you can, try to spend 40-50 minutes on each session to replicate a real test environment. Lots of small sessions is key.
Route Choice
Use the app route preview to choose a simple map to begin. When you gain confidence, progress to more difficult maps.
Weather & Time
Drive at different times of the day, in varying weather conditions. You never know what the traffic and weather will be like on test day!

Whilst conducting the independent driving test, the examiner will request the student to follow instructions from the Sat-Nav. The examiner will bring an already setup Tomtom Start 52 device. All you’ll have to do is to follow directions from the device. The make or model of the Satnav that you’ll use during your learning sessions won’t matter one bit. As a leading SatNav company, we provide driving test routes for Android, Garmin, Tomtom and iPhone devices. You can’t use your own Sat-nav device in the driving test.

We aim to provide purchasers with a lot of support and help with Route-Led's routes. You will quickly become skilled at the various routes we provided. However, we definitely recommend having someone that is a professional teacher.

In the course of the independent driving test, the examiner will give the learner all the relevant directions. In case the learner gets lost during the journey, they will be required to confirm the instructions from the test examiner. Learners can’t utilise personal satNav devices for independent driving because they give turn-by-turn instructions. Independent driving will check the skill of the examinee to make independent choices.
