Test Focus Areas

Across the many route variations available to practise, there are a number of common roads and roundabouts that frequently appear. Be sure to spend a little extra time driving the following areas:

  1. Kingsway (A90)
One of the busiest parts of many routes, it’s a great place to show good lane discipline and confident merging. Keep an eye on signs as exits can come up quicker than expected!

  2. Coupar Angus Road & Dunsinane Avenue
These roads will test your awareness and how well you adapt to heavier vehicles and changing conditions.

  3. Lochee & Blackness Areas
These older residential streets can feel tight , with parked cars and mini roundabouts common. Take your time and use proper clutch control to keep your driving smooth.

  4. Strathmartine Road & Clepington Road
Busy local roads that both feature traffic lights and multi-lane roundabouts. Watch your positioningas you progress and don’t let other drivers rush you.

  5. Roundabouts
Dundee has no shortage of them - from smaller residential ones to the multi-lane junctions on Kingsway. The key is to look early, commit only when it’s safe, and keep scanning as you exit.

Based on the 16+ route variations offered in the app:

Average Length: 8.7 miles

Average Duration: 36 minutes

Additional Tips

With our app installed you have given yourself a huge advantage in preparing for your test. Here are some additional tips that compliment following the exact routes:

Route Previews

Scroll through the route preview maps to choose a suitable starter. As you confidence grows you can tackle the more complicated ones.

Weather

UK weather is unpredictable… it’s wise to practise in all weather conditions (rain, wind, low-light) so handling test-day is easy.

Traffic

With busier traffic tending to be early morning and late afternoon (rush hour) you should get some practise hours during these times.

Sat nav Driving Test Routes

After 4th December, 2017, the United Kingdom driving test also requires following SatNav instructions. Given Route-Led is the leading provider of Satnav test-routes in the UK, we supply many test-routes for Garmin and Tom tom devices. For customers that want to buy satNav devices, we definitely recommend the Tom-Tom Start 52, pretty much as it’s the #1 pick for the Dundee driving test examiners.

iPhone SatNav Test Routes

Route-LED has made practicing test routes a lot easier with an iPhone device by creating test routes just for iPhones. All you have to do is to either purchase our iPhone file, and then use a recommended 3rd party app to use the driving test routes or load RL’s dedicated iPhone app in the Apple app store following Route-LED's detailed instructions. The iPhone can then navigate you to the Dundee test centre, all around the test route, and finally returning to the test centre. Whilst using our test routes, you’ll be navigated securely with the helpful voice-guided directions to Dundee test centre.

Sat Nav Driving Test

The examiner will ask the student to take instructions from a configured Sat-nav on their own. The Sat-Nav will show the route that the learner is required to track. The make or model of Sat nav device utilised during the exam won’t really matter as the test route will be the same. In the situation where the learner driver takes a different route, the examiner will advise accordingly. That said, we very much suggest the Tom-Tom Start 52 mainly because it is the device examiners tend to use whilst conducting driving tests.

Practice

We like to provide customers with a lot of help and support with Route-Led's products. You will quickly become skilled at the different routes we provided. However, we of course recommend having a person that is a professional instructor.

Independent Driving Test

In the course of the independent driving test, the examiner will provide the student all the necessary instructions. If the learner gets lost along the way, they will be required to confirm the directions from the test examiner. Students cannot use personal Sat-Nav for independent driving as they give detailed voice prompts. Independent driving will test the skill of the examinee to undertake independent choices.

Dundee Test Centre Details

The Dundee test centre is located at Block 23B, Kilspindie Place, Dunsinane Industrial Estate, Dundee Angus DD2 3QH. There should be ramp access for wheelchair users but we suggest calling to make sure. There are also usually female, male and disabled facilities for use at the test centre but it's generally best to use these at your house in advance! It is occasionally feasible to park at the test centre. If this is not possible, it should be fine to park close by and walk. Be prepared for difficult junctions, one-way streets, busy roads and roundabouts. Using test-routes whilst learning to drive is always very useful, as it allows you to practice on routes that you’ll certainly be driving during your test.
