Route 1 Instructions:

  1. Depart from the Driving Test Centre and turn left
  2. On Shaftesbury Avenue, turn left
  3. On Leicester Avenue, turn right at the traffic lights
  4. At Leger Way Roundabout, take the 1st exit (left)
  5. Continue on Bawtry Road through the traffic lights
  6. On Bawtry Road, turn right
  7. On Ellers Road, take the 2nd left
  8. At the end of Ellers Drive, turn left
  9. On Boswell Road, take the 1st right
  10. At the end of Stoops Road, turn left
  11. On Alston Road, take the 2nd right
  12. At the end of Broughton Road, turn left
  13. Continue along Stoops Lane and at the lights go ahead
  14. At the end of Church Lane, turn left
  15. At Goodison Boulevard Roundabout, take the 1st exit (left)
  16. At the lights, turn right onto Cantley Lane
  17. At Bawtry Road Roundabout, continue ahead
  18. Continue as Bennethorpe becomes South Parade and turn right at the lights
  19. On Thorne Road, take the compulsory left
  20. At East Laithegate Roundabout, take the 3rd exit (right)
  21. On Thorne Road, turn right
  22. Take the next left into Balmoral Road
  23. Take the next right into Hampton Road
  24. At the lights on Zetland Road, continue ahead
  25. Turn left onto Leicester Avenue
  26. Turn right onto Shaftesbury Avenue
  27. Return to the Driving Test Centre

Route Focus Areas

With over 20 route variations documented for the Doncaster driving test, it’s no surprise that some roads and areas appear more than others. Here are some that appear often, and are worth a little extra practise:

  1. Leger Way & Thorne Road:
    As two of Doncaster’s busiest roads, you’ll deal with larger roundabouts and faster-moving traffic so stay calm, check mirrors early, and plan your lane position in advance.

  2. Bawtry Road & Cantley Lane:
    Often used during any dual carriageway and higher-speed sections. You should be ready for the changes in speed limit and any merging vehicles.

  3. Armthorpe Road & Sandringham Road:
    Offering a mix of urban driving and smaller roundabouts, these roads are great for demonstrating smooth gear changes and good use of mirrors.

  4. Shaftesbury Avenue & Leicester Avenue:
    Close to Doncaster test centre and often used for the start and end of the route. Pay attention here; your examiner will watch for careful junction control from the very beginning.

  5. Town Centre (Silver Street / Hall Gate area):
    Tight lanes, traffic lights, and pedestrian activity make these areas ideal for showing your awareness, patience, and clutch control whilst in slower traffic.

Independent Driving Test


The test examiner will ask the student to take directions from a configured satnav on their own. The Satnav will include the route that the learner needs to follow. The model or make of Sat nav device utilised while the exam is going on won’t make a difference mainly because the test-route will be identical. In case the student accidentally tries a different route, the examiner will let them know and give instructions. That said, we very much recommend the Tom Tom Start 52 mainly as it is the device examiners tend to utilise whilst examining driving tests.

Doncaster Test Centre Details


Doncaster test centre is located at Unit 10 & 11 Heather Court, Shaw Wood Business Park, Shaw Wood Way, Doncaster South Yorkshire DN2 5YL. There ought to be ramp access for disabled users but it would be best to call to make sure. There are also quite often female, disabled and male facilities available at the test centre but it's generally best to go before you travel there! It is occasionally feasible to park at the test centre. If this is not possible, it should be easy to park nearby and get there by foot. Be prepared for one-way streets, difficult junctions, busy roads and roundabouts.
