Key Roads To Practise

Throughout the 20+ test route variations, there are a number of roads that appear more frequently than others. It’s worth spending some time practising them, as they will likely appear in your test:

  • Bristol Road & Marshfield Road:
Both busy sections with several mini roundabouts close together making them great for practising giving way to the right and minimising hesitation.

  • Malmesbury Road (A350):
Often used for higher-speed driving sections. Be sure to stay calm, and join any dual carriageways confidently, remembering to check your mirrors.

  • Bath Road & New Road:
Town-centre routes with the usual traffic lights, pedestrian activity, and parked cars. Keep your speed steady and stay alert for any potential hazards.

  • Hardenhuish Avenue & Yewstock Crescent:
Residential areas where you may be asked to perform one of your manoeuvres - they're both perfect for showing car control and awareness at lower speeds.

  • Patterdown & Cepen Way:
A mixture of rural and major routes with several roundabouts along the duration. Watch your speed, and plan for any roundabouts in advance.

Sat Nav Driving Test

Practise

Independent Driving Test

The test examiner will ask the student to take instructions from a configured Sat-Nav on their own. The Sat-nav will include the route that the learner needs to track. The model or make of Satnav used during the examination won’t really make a difference mainly because the test-route will be the same. In the situation where the student accidentally tries the wrong road, the examiner will advise accordingly. That said, we very much recommend the Tomtom Start 52 mainly as it is the device examiners use while examining driving tests.

We aim to provide customers with a great deal of help and support with our routes. You’ll quickly become skilled at the various routes provided. However, we definitely recommend using someone that is a professional teacher.

When you go off the independent driving route, it’s not going to have any impact on your examination results unless you do some other driving error, make a traffic offence or break a traffic regulation. In the case where you do an incorrect turn, the examiner will help you to get back to the route. Where you have obscure or poor traffic signs, the examiner will instruct the examinee until they get to the following visible traffic sign. The examinee does not have to have a detailed knowledge of the area. You can’t use your personal Sat-nav device for independent driving, as it gives the learner turn-by-turn instructions. The independent driving part will test if you can effect safe independent choices.
