Key Roads and Test Features
There are a number of roads, roundabouts and features that regularly appear throughout the test routes, and are worth mentioning. During your Cardigan test you will likely encounter:
A487 (Aberystwyth and Cardigan Roads):
This is the main route in and out of Cardigan, so you’ll spend a fair bit of time here. The speed limits change, so keep an eye on the signs and be ready to adjust.Feidr Fair and Pendre:
These are your typical town roads with a few tight turns and narrow spots. Take your time, stay relaxed, and kwatch for parked cars and people crossing.Finch Square Roundabout:
You’ll almost definitely visit this roundabout. It can be busy, so plan ahead, check your mirrors, and make sure you’re in the correct lane early.Aberystwyth Road and the Bypass:
This section lets you build up speed a little more. Focus on your smooth gear changes, proper spacing from the car in front, and early mirror checks when joining or leaving.Cardigan Town Centre:
Expect slower traffic, tighter corners, and the odd pedestrian stepping out! Keep your clutch control steady and give yourself time to react.
Getting the Most out of the Routes - Tips
You've got access to the smartest, most effective practice aid available. Here's how to make the most of it and increase your chances of passing:
Route Order
Start with the easier routes to build your confidence, then move on to more complicated ones. Mixing them up keeps your sharp.
Weather
Practise in different conditions - rain, glare, or low light. It helps to build resilience for whatever the test day brings.
Time of Day
Try morning and afternoon drives. Varying traffic levels will help you stay calm under pressure whether it’s a morning or afternoon test.
The Test Explained
Your test will last about 40 minutes, including 20 minutes of independent driving using a sat nav or following road signs. You’ll need to complete one manoeuvre and may be asked to perform an emergency stop.
Examiners are checking for safe, confident driving - not perfection.
Am I ready?
If you can drive confidently without any prompts, handle all manoeuvres smoothly, and stay calm during busy traffic, you’re ready. Use our practice routes to ensure you’re comfortable with all local roundabouts, dual carriageways, and junctions around the Cardigan Test Centre.
Booking
Book your driving test online early, as waiting times can be long. Choose Cardigan Test Centre and confirm you’ve met all DVSA requirements before paying for your slot.
Choosing the Best Time
Mid-morning or early-afternoon appointments often mean steadier traffic and better visibility. Avoid school-run times if you find busy roads stressful.
Rescheduling or Cancelling
Plans change - and that’s fine. You can reschedule or cancel your test through the DVSA website, as long as it’s at least three working days before your test date to avoid losing your fee.
Test Day Preparation
Remember to bring:
Your provisional driving licence
A car that meets DVSA standards (insured, taxed, and roadworthy)
Your certificate of theory test completion
Glasses or contact lenses if you need them to drive
Tip: Arrive 10 minutes early for a more relaxed start - your examiner will explain everything before you start.
