Key Test Moments

There are a number of key features that regularly appear across the Bolton routes. The following roads, roundabouts and junctions are worth a little extra practise for an added confidence boost!

  • St Helens Road:
A busy stretch with a few sets of traffic lights and required lane changes. Keep your awareness up, especially around any buses and cars that may turn unexpectedly.

  • Derby Street:
As one of the main through-routes in Bolton, there is often mixed traffic and cyclists. Maintain good spacing and smooth gear changes in this section.

  • Chorley New Road:
A quicker section where you’ll need lane discipline and to merge at higher-speed. Stay calm throughout, and check your mirrors before any lane changes.

  • Beaumont Road and Wigan Road:
These are both typical suburban routes with varying speed limits and a number of roundabouts. They’re great for practising your mirror-signal-manoeuvre discipline and speed changes.

  • Town Centre Section (Fletcher Street and College Way):
Expect several sets of traffic lights, pedestrian activity, and tight junctions. Keep your head on a swivel, and perform regular checks to make a strong impression here.

Satnav Driving Test

Whilst conducting the independent driving test, the examiner will ask the student to follow directions from the Sat nav. The examiner will provide an already setup Tom-tom Start 52 device. All you’ll have to do is to take instructions from the satNav. The make or model of the Satnav that you’ll use during your learning sessions will not make a difference one bit. As a leading SatNav company, we provide driving test-routes for Tomtom, iPhone, Garmin and Android devices. You cannot utilise your personal Sat-nav in the driving test.

Practice

Route-led provides clients with a high degree of help and support to use our driving test routes. You will get used to all the different sections of the roads to be travelled during the examination. We would recommend using a skilled driving instructor in addition. For more information on how you can practise for your driving examination please go to Driving Test Practice

Independent Driving Test

If you veer off the independent driving route, it will not have any impact on your test results unless you make an additional driving mistake, break a traffic regulation or commit a traffic offence. In the case where you do an incorrect route choice, the examiner will help you in getting back to the correct route. Where you have poor or obscure road signs, the examiner will direct the learner until they arrive at the following visible road sign. The learner does not need to have a detailed knowledge of the town. You can’t use your own SatNav for independent driving, as it gives the student very detailed instructions. The independent driving section is designed to test if you are able to effect safe independent choices.
