The Roads You'll Face
Few test centres throw such a varied mix at you in a single route. Here's what to expect across the different environments the routes cover.
Dual carriageways and the Ringway system
Basingstoke's ring road — Ringway South and Ringway West — features on multiple routes. You'll be joining via slip roads, maintaining speed with traffic, and selecting the correct exit at roundabouts while travelling faster than you would in town. This is where composure under pressure really matters.
Residential estates and cul-de-sacs
Several routes move through the housing estates south of the test centre — roads like Brighton Way, Gershwin Road, Strauss Road, Quilter Road and the streets around Hatch Warren. These sections involve tight turns, frequent end-of-road decisions, and careful observation in areas where pedestrians and parked cars are a constant factor.
Town centre approaches
Routes via Worting Road, Queens Road and Lower Brook Street bring you into the older town centre area, where traffic lights, lane changes and busier junctions replace the roundabout-led navigation of the ring road. Getting through these sections smoothly requires good anticipation of what's ahead.
Roundabouts — full and mini
Basingstoke has both, and the routes use both regularly. You'll encounter straightforward single-lane roundabouts alongside the larger multi-exit junctions at Hatch Warren Way, Winchester Road and Grove Road — plus mini roundabouts on Sullivan Road and Brighton Way that require quick, decisive responses.
“Best driving test app out there! Helped me become more confident ready for my test.”
“Passed first time! Practicing the routes really helped!”
Sections Worth Paying Extra Attention To
Demanding in specific ways... there are spots where things tend to go wrong — and where preparation makes the biggest difference.
Joining and leaving the Ringway via slip roads
Several routes use the slip roads onto Ringway South and Ringway West. Joining a dual carriageway from a slip road — matching speed, checking mirrors and blind spots, finding a safe gap — is a high-stakes moment in any test. The Basingstoke routes do this more than once, and each time the examiner will be watching your approach closely.
The Hatch Warren Way roundabout exits
This roundabout appears on multiple routes but with different exit instructions each time — first exit on one route, fourth exit on another. If you've only practised a couple of routes, it's easy to take the wrong exit on test day through muscle memory. Knowing all the routes removes that risk entirely.
Road name changes
Roads change name without a junction — Deep Lane becomes Lower Brook Street, and Sheppard Road flows into Cranbourne Lane. If you're navigating by road name and the name suddenly changes, it can unsettle your confidence at a critical moment.
The Sullivan Road mini roundabout
Close to the test centre and encountered at the very start or end of many routes, this mini roundabout requires a quick, clear decision while you're either still settling in or approaching the finish. It's a small junction that gets disproportionate attention from examiners precisely because it's so early in the test.
Test Manoeuvres — Where and What to Expect
One manoeuvre will be included somewhere in your test. These are the most likely scenarios and the types of roads they tend to occur on.
- Pulling up on the right and reversing — The quieter residential roads off Brighton Way, Hatch Warren and the Harrow Way area are the most likely settings. Roads wide enough to pull up safely but quiet enough to reverse without causing disruption.
- Bay parking — The test centre at Brighton Hill Centre has its own car park, making a bay park on return very plausible. Worth practising in both directions — forward and reverse bay parks are both fair game.
- Emergency stop — Most likely on the lower-speed residential sections rather than near the ring road. Routes through the Gershwin Road and Strauss Road estate areas or the streets off Cliddesden Road provide the right conditions.
Knowing the routes means you'll recognise the calmer stretches where manoeuvres are most likely

FAQs
-
Yes — several routes use Ringway South and Ringway West, including joining via slip roads.
This is one of the things that makes the Basingstoke test more demanding than average, and it's one of the best reasons to practise the routes in full.
-
We use real GPS data from live tests alongside ongoing input from ADIs working in the Basingstoke area.
When roads change — new layouts, temporary closures, updated junctions — we update the routes in the app.
-
A higher pass rate reflects a well-organised centre with consistent standards, but it doesn't mean the routes are straightforward.
The dual carriageway sections, the volume of roundabouts, and the mix of driving environments all require genuine preparation.
The pass rate is encouragement that the test is fair — not a reason to go in underprepared.
-
With 19+ routes to cover, you won't need to do every single one dozens of times.
Aim for at least two or three runs on each, ideally at different times of day — the Ringway and town centre sections feel very different in morning rush hour compared to a quiet afternoon.
