Key Banff Areas to Practise
Below are a few key areas in Banff that are worth spending some time practising as they appear in nearly all the routes variations. It’s highly likely you will encounter these during your test:
A98 (Banff - Whitehills / Portsoy)
A fast-moving rural A-road with changing speed limits. Examiners will be assessing your confidence joining traffic, overtaking safely, and adjusting your speed smoothly for bends.
A947 & Banff Bridge
A major route linking Macduff and Banff across the River Deveron. The bridge is narrow and can be busy, so good road positioning and hazard anticipation are essential.
Sandyhill Road & High Street
A mix of residential and town-centre driving with pedestrians, parked cars and varied priorities. These are common areas to be asked to perform manoeuvres.
Whitehills Village
Tight coastal streets with give-way markings, blind corners and narrow lanes where you can showcase your low-speed control and awareness.
Moray View / Boyndie Road
Regularly used to connect Banff to the more rural loops where you will be expected to negotiate speed changes, open bends and farm entrances. Regular mirror checks and good anticipation is key.

Banff Driving Test Centre
Situated enar Banff Bay on Castle street… the DVSA centre is both convenient and easy to reach for locals and those travelling from further afield. There is no dedicated parking, however you should be able to easily park nearby along the surrounding roads. The pass rate of 65.9% should be very encouraging as it’s well above the national average, and average waiting times help make this a popular venue. For directions, visit: Google Maps or Streetview.
