Step-by-Step Routes

Route 1 Instructions:

  1. Leave the Driving Test Centre by the Fire Station and turn left onto Braichlie Road.
  2. Follow Braichlie Road and at the end of Deebank Road, turn right.
  3. Continue along Salisbury Road to the end of the road, then turn right.
  4. Travel along Golf Road and turn left into Viewfield Place.
  5. At the end of Viewfield Place, turn left onto Viewfield Road / Invercauld Road.
  6. Continue to the end of Viewfield Road / Invercauld Road and turn right onto Braemar Road (A93).
  7. On Braemar Road (A93), take the second right into Golf Road.
  8. On Golf Road, take the third left into Braichlie Road.
  9. On Braichlie Road, take the second right into Albert Road.
  10. At the end of Albert Road, turn left back onto Braichlie Road.
  11. Continue along Braichlie Road and turn right into Victoria Road / Hawthorn Place, then take the next left to stay within the estate.
  12. On Hawthorn Grove, take the second right into Sir Patrick Geddes Way.
  13. At the end of Sir Patrick Geddes Way, turn right into Craig View Road.
  14. At the end of Craig View Road, turn left onto Tullich Road (A93).
  15. Continue along Tullich Road (A93) and at the end of the road turn left onto Pass of Ballater (B972).
  16. Follow Pass of Ballater (B972) and at the junction turn right onto Braemar Road (A93).
  17. On Braemar Road (A93), take the second right back towards the village.
  18. Continue along Invercauld Road / Abergeldie Road / Viewfield Road and take the second left into Queens Road.
  19. At the end of Queens Road, turn left onto Invercauld Road.
  20. At the end of Invercauld Road, turn left onto Braemar Road.
  21. Travel along Pass of Ballater (B972), then turn right, and at the end of that stretch turn right again.
  22. At the end of Tullich Road (A93), turn right back towards Ballater.
  23. Continue along Bridge Street and take the third left into the village.
  24. On Victoria Road, take the second left into Braichlie Road.
  25. Return along Braichlie Road to the Driving Test Centre.

    3. Follow Monaltrie Road / Station Square and turn right onto Braemar Road.

    4. At the end of Braemar Road, turn right into Provost Craig Road.

    5. At the end of Provost Craig Road, turn right into Hawthorn Place and take the third right back towards Braemar Road.

    6. On Braemar Road, turn left onto Golf Road.

    7. Follow Golf Road and turn right into Braichlie Road.

    8. On Braichlie Road, take the next left into Victoria Road, then take the second right into Bridge Street.

    9. On Bridge Street, take the second left onto Tullich Road (A93).

    10. Continue along Tullich Road (A93) and take the third left onto Pass of Ballater.

    11. At the end of Pass of Ballater, turn left onto Braemar Road (A93).

    1. Leave the Driving Test Centre on Braichlie Road and take the fourth left.

    2. Continue along Victoria Road and turn left into Salisbury Road.

    3. On Salisbury Road, turn left into Albert Road.

    4. At the end of Albert Road, turn left back onto Salisbury Road.

    5. Continue along Salisbury Road and turn left into Deebank Road.

    6. At the end of Deebank Road, turn left into Braichlie Road.

    7. On Braichlie Road, take the second right and continue ahead into Victoria Road.

    8. Follow Victoria Road and at the end of Hawthorn Place turn left, then left again to stay within the estate.

    9. At the end of Hawthorn Grove, turn right onto Braemar Road (A93).

    10. Continue along Braemar Road (A93) and at the junction for Pass of Ballater, turn left.

    11. At the far end of Pass of Ballater, turn right onto Tullich Road towards Dinnet, then at the end of that stretch turn right again.

Key Roads, Junctions & Features in Ballater

Though there are several variations of test routes in Ballater, there are a number of roads and areas that repeat regularly. It’s worth spending a little extra time familiarising yourself with the following ares:

Braichlie Road & Fire Station area

Almost every route starts and ends around Braichlie Road by the Fire Station. It’s an early chance to show your clutch control skills, mirror checks and signalling as you deal with the first few turns.

Braemar Road (A93)

The A93 runs right through Ballater and appears several times on each route variation. Expect changes in speed, oncoming traffic and the need for good lane positioning as you enter and leave the village.

Pass of Ballater (B972)

This twisting B-road is used for more rural-style driving where you’ll meet bends, undulations and tighter junctions. It’s great for showing the examiner you can manage your speed in accordance to changing road conditions.

Tullich Road (A93 towards Dinnet)

Tullich Road takes you out of Ballater towards Dinnet and back again. It’s a good place to demonstrate safe overtaking decisions (often choosing not to overtake) and early observation at side-road junctions.

Victoria Road, Bridge Street & the village centre

Most routes loop through the centre via Victoria Road, Bridge Street and the surrounding residential streets where you’ll handle parked cars, pedestrians and lower speeds.
