Key Focus Areas
Ayr’s test routes make regular use of a few well-known roads, estates and roundabouts. Getting to know these in advance helps the whole route feel more familiar. During your Ayr test, you’ll likely come across:
Whitletts Road & Main Road
Almost every route starts and finishes along this long stretch. You can expect to navigate several sets of traffic lights, changing speed limits, and plenty of everyday traffic filtering in from side streets.
A77 Roundabouts
The A77 corridor has several consecutive roundabouts, and many routes loop through two or three in a row. They’re ideal for demonstrating good lane discipline, timing your signals correctly, and confidently joining flowing traffic.
Doonfoot Road & Surrounding Estates
These areas bring quiet residential bends, give-way junctions, and a mix of wider and tighter streets. It’s a good test of clutch control, patience around parked cars, and smooth steering.
Holmston Road & Racecourse Area
A busy part of Ayr, featuring multiple roundabouts and turnings close together. Reading signs early and planning ahead really shows you're in control here.
Heathfield Road & North Ayr Estates
Many routes loop through the northern housing estates via Heathfield Road, Boundary Road and the surrounding grid. These areas are perfect for showing good anticipation around pedestrians, and sensible speed on narrower streets.
