Key Roads & Roundabouts in Alnwick

There are a number of key roads, and roundabouts that come up again and again across the Alnwick test routes, so they’re worth learning when you head out. During your test, you’ll probably come across:

Clayport Road

Appearing in lots of routes, it ties the town centre to the outer estates. It’s a good place to show smooth speed changes and calm steering as the road narrows, bends and opens out again.

Green Batt & Tower Lane

These narrow, older-town streets feature near the start or end of many tests. Their tight layout makes them ideal for demonstrating careful positioning and awareness of parked cars and pedestrians.

The Peth & B6341

This approach in and out of town includes gradients, bends and a small roundabout. It’s useful for practising gear choice, forward planning and spotting how the road layout changes as you move towards the centre.

A1 Slip Roads & Willowburn Avenue

Quite a few routes involve joining or leaving the A1. Those slip roads and the nearby Willowburn Avenue roundabouts will test your mirror work, acceleration and confidence when merging.

Swansfield Park Road & Wagonway Road Loop

These residential stretches bring in parked cars, bends and priority changes. Show that you can keep the car flowing smoothly while staying patient and giving yourself time to react.

Additional Tips

Using the app to drive the routes gives you a huge advantage on test day. Combined with the following tips you’re in a really good position to drive confidently when the time comes.

Wet Weather

If it’s raining, don’t let that put you off practising. Get confident driving in all weather conditions as it could well rain on test day.

Choice of Route

The app lets you preview the routes before driving, so choose an easier looking route to begin with, before progressing through the rest.

Time & Traffic

Your test could be first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon, so practise driving during busier times so you are used to traffic.
