Focus On These Key Areas
There are a handful of roads and junctions in Alness and Invergorden that appear again and again. Getting familiar with these key areas will make the whole test feel much easier to handle.
Fyrish Way
Almost every route begins or ends along Fyrish Way, often with early turns or roundabout exits. It’s a useful place to settle your nerves early and show the examiner that you can handle basic observations and lane positioning from the outset.
High Street (Invergordon & Alness)
Both towns have busy High Street stretches, and you’ll drive through them on most routes. You can expect parked cars, changing speed limits, and plenty of pedestrian activity.
A9 Junctions & Slip Roads
The A9 features heavily across the routes, with several northbound and southbound slip roads to negotiate. These sections will test your mirror work, acceleration, and confidence merging with faster-moving traffic.
Dalmore Road Roundabouts
Connecting the towns and including multiple roundabouts that appear in nearly every test. They’re ideal for demonstrating proper technique every time, and clear signalling when exits come up quickly one after another.
Clyde Street & Shore Road Loop
This coastal loop includes bends, priority junctions, and repeated changes in direction, making it a great area for practising steering accuracy, anticipation, and staying composed.
Additional Tips
Driving using our app alongside the following tips will give you a great driving foundation. You’ll enter your test full of confidence in your ability, no matter what the test conditions:
Weather
Raining outside? Don’t shy away from practising… it might rain during your test, so gaining wet driving experience is important.
Traffic
Great for developing solid clutch-control, aim to practise during rush hours too, in case your test booking is early morning or late afternoon.
Difficulty
Choose a route that you are comfortable with to begin, using the preview facility. As confidence grows, move to other maps.
